Individual Schema Therapy is a one-on-one therapeutic approach that helps clients uncover and transform maladaptive schemas. Schemas are long-standing patterns of thought, emotion, and behavior that often develop in childhood when core emotional needs are unmet.
This approach also explores modes, or moment-to-moment emotional states such as the Vulnerable Child, Angry Child, Punitive Parent, and Healthy Adult. By strengthening the Healthy Adult mode, clients learn to nurture themselves, set boundaries, challenge inner criticism, and replace harmful coping behaviors with healthier alternatives.
