Positive Sobriety Institute (PSI) specializes in treating addiction and co-occurring mental health conditions for a wide range of professionals, including physicians, attorneys, and executives, in high-stress, high-accountability roles, as well as individuals looking for personalized treatment in a safe, discreet, and supportive environment. Unsurpassed Expertise and Caliber of Care Located in the heart of Chicago, and led by a multidisciplinary team of board-certified psychiatrists, psychologists, and therapists with specialized training in treating addiction, PSI addresses the full spectrum of each client’s recovery needs so they can return to their personal and professional lives feeling strong, productive, and inspired. PSI offers a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) that provides a full day of intensive, structured treatment five days a week, as well as both daytime and evening Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) to accommodate the needs of busy professionals. With a focus on personalized group therapy, PSI provides a supportive environment for clients to create a foundation for life in recovery. Evidence-Based and Holistic Therapies PSI utilizes multiple evidenced-based modalities as well as trauma informed approaches, including CBT, DBT, ACT, IFS, experiential therapies, somatic therapy, yoga, and art therapy. Additionally, PSI offers wellness sessions, including nutrition, mindfulness meditation, sound therapy, and strength & conditioning. PSI’s comprehensive continuum of care focuses on assessing the role of trauma and addiction, supporting patients in understanding their lived experience, and beginning the work of recovery and resilience. If you’re a licensed professional being forced into an evaluation by a board or program, or PHP, I urge you to be extremely cautious before agreeing to an assessment with PSI/MCAP in Chicago. I went through their two-day evaluation as a fully compliant nurse with over a year of clean drug tests and no reported safety issues. Despite this, they diagnosed me with severe cannabis use disorder—even though I hadn’t used cannabis in over a year, never failed a single test, and used it legally in the past for sleep and anxiety under medical guidance. They also performed neurocognitive testing on me while I was under the influence of prescribed Valium, and still used the results to claim I was cognitively impaired—without offering a retest or acknowledging how invalid that makes the findings. Worse, they took my prescribed use of medications like Adderall and Klonopin—used exactly as ordered—and over a year ago, and labeled me with stimulant and sedative use disorders, even while acknowledging those were “iatrogenic” (caused by medical care). The report ignored my diagnosed ADHD and pathologized my disagreement with their findings as “poor insight” or “rigidity,” rather than legitimate advocacy. They cited no collateral sources, except to explain what iatrogenic was, they sited a source from 1978. I had no workplace incidents, and no objective safety concerns. Despite that, their report was used to suspend my license, cost me my jobs, and disrupt my life entirely. If you’re required to undergo a professional fitness evaluation, I strongly recommend choosing an evaluator who is unbiased, actually knows how to follow DSM-5 standards appropriately, and considers objective facts—not one who imposes overly broad, harmful, and unscientific judgments that can destroy your career.

I’m a prior Northwestern addiction psychiatry fellow physician that had the privilege of working with the team at PSI a couple of years ago. I learned more than I could ever have imagined, not just about addiction but about empathy, stigma, and how to ACTUALLY get people better. The therapy staff is next to none. The physicians are compassionate and brilliant (truly). I still reach out from time to time, and thank them for my ability to treat patients I see now (especially professionals ie physicians, lawyers, dentists, nurses, professors or teachers etc) because I know how to get them where they need to be and advocate for their return to work. I’m forever grateful for my experience and would repeat my time at PSI in an instant if I had the opportunity.

Dominic and the staff have always been helpful and delivered effective treatment. Living in the Chicago area my entire life, there are not many options for private effective treatment and their facility is who I am most comfortable working with.
