Worst experience ever!!! Avoid this place at all cost!!! My teen daughter was admitted for a mental health issue. Treating doctor had tunnel vision very early on without trying to understand the underlying issue that caused this. She was more worried my daughter had to be told to eat when the food there was nasty- she just didn’t want to eat that crap!! Within a day or two of being there and her sleeping was restored she was completely back to herself but the doctor kept saying things that didn’t add up to keep her there. The doctor was treating her for one issue again based on her tunnel vision but not the underlying issue of anxiety so the worrisome feelings were still present even after leaving there. My daughter is still experiencing trauma from her stay there, the constant fights between other patients, unsympathetic staff, and I could go on and on. She is now being treated by a wonderful psychiatrist and on the correct meds and is doing fantastic. As others have mentioned if you love your child, please stay away from this place! I wish I would have read the reviews beforehand and gotten her the help needed elsewhere!

Mood stabilizers are antiepileptic drugs that don't actually stabilize mood, but suppress emotional responses by sedating and calming people. It's no surprise that doctors believe antiepileptics work against mania, since anything that numbs people's emotions helps with mania. No guarantees. Hopefully, this helps someone.

I called to ask about my mother's whereabouts and gave the phone operator her name. She typed her name in, said she couldn't find her, and then hung up on me. I know she is there because she was specifically discharged to this location. I have never had a phone operator at a medical institution hang up on me. That is completely unacceptable.

Staff said that a patient was "thirsty" :( 0/10 that's really creepy. Staff haven't read Dante, 0/10 no media literacy. You can't actually do anything to get better, "getting better" is completely observation based so you're spending at least 7 days there. Not a place to get help, it's a holding cell for people who they think will kill themselves otherwise. You talk to actual qualified medical professionals for 15 minutes a day. I came for help instead I was treated like a toddler (couldn't do schoolwork, I'm Asian for God's sake) Go here and get put in a room with crayons and coloring sheets for 13 hours :)

My experience at Sheppard Pratt was incredibly frustrating and disappointing. I went there during one of the most hardest moments of my life, expecting support, and real help. The lack of clear communication made everything worse. When you’re struggling so bad mentally, the last thing you need is to feel unheard or misunderstood but it’s something I felt often by the staff. During a staff talk I mention my urges to self- harm which I had previously done in the bathroom the staff made a joke out of it stating “let me see your playing face, let me see your joking face because I think your lying”. I think Basic empathy and support should not be optional in a mental health hospital. Fights happened everyday in the waterfall unit, which staff didn’t seem prepared or looked like they didn’t know how to break up the fight instead they called for a code green every time. Sleeping in those rooms were hard not only because of the rooms there self but you can often hear staff talking right outside your door or staff yelling “call the code green” for patients not sleeping and coming out of there rooms. And dong get me started on the food, 2/10… the cleanliness of the rooms and bathroom was lacked and I often saw bloody pads laying around with dirty underwear. I got accused of doing something inappropriate with another patient when another patient went and told on us for something we didn’t do and instead of taking the time to review cameras and hear our story they instead believed the other mentally ill patient side, which we were than put on a 10 foot. Most days consisted of lock downs which is where we stay in our rooms and it was the worst if you didn’t have a roommate in your room, you would be bored out of your mind. The white walls, and small bed in a big room is all you have to entertain yourself. I understand that hospitals are busy but that doesn’t excuse making patients feel invisible. You signed up for the job, work to the expectation that you signed up for. Mental health care requires patience, compassion, and genuine human support and that was not consistently my experience here. I hope serious changes are made so others don’t leave feeling more frustrated than supported.

EXTREMELY wicked, hateful, and bigoted company. I freind of mine is afraid of seeking medical care now because of the discrimination she suffered - being called an "it" by staff, mocked, ridiculed, and called "retard" for being autistic after she started rocking back and forth from being overwhelmed by the abuse. And then they threatened to 51-50 her. This was AFTER Aamother patient got in her face and tried to fight her for being trans. The staff did NOTHI G. *DO NOT GO HERE, AND DO NOT SEND YOUR LOVED ONES HERE IF YOU VALUE THEIR THEIR HEALTH.*

I want to thank everyone for there helpful reviews. I was going to admit my loved one, but based on these reviews, I will never consider this place. I thought based on the location and longevity of this hospital, that my loved one would receive optimum care. I’m soooo glad I didn’t rely on just the information on the website.
