Eating Recovery Center Chicago - Huron

I was treated in the Eating Recovery Center in Chicago Huron Street from November 27th to December 23rd in the PHP Program and will now transition into IOP. PHP was an incredible experience. Every Person who works there is so supportive and friendly. I was able to let go of my Eating Disorder and the Quality of my Life has improved so much. Thank you so much for all the wonderful people working there. Go there for treatment, your life will be so much better when you take the step!

As a Black woman and current client, at Eating Recovery Center Chicago – Huron, I am currently enduring a deeply troubling and traumatizing experience involving racism— one that has exposed the systemic failures and harmful inaction of this facility’s leadership. A white cisgender man, another client, has made racist remarks and caused harm to me, my peers (also Black women), and even staff (also people of color). We’ve been vocal about this. We’ve advocated for ourselves and for one another. A staff member who was also victimized by this individual bravely sent emails documenting the situation, but no real action was taken. No one on floor staff or nursing was even aware of what had happened until almost a week later. Leadership only “officially” acknowledged the harm we’ve endured today — Monday, October 13, 2025 — but I’ve since been made aware, through a trusted source, that they knew about this situation before today and still chose to do nothing. Now, they’re using the excuse of “lack of documentation” to claim they can’t act, even though they themselves chose not to document the reports that were made. When we were finally met with, leadership said they wanted “what’s best for us (as in me, and my peers) for him, and for the company.” That sentence alone made it clear: this was never about protecting or supporting us. It was about protecting the company and maintaining their image. Meanwhile, the white man who caused this/us harm?
 Still here.
 Still protected.
 Still unpunished. Let me be clear: there has been no justice for the Black women or any people of color harmed by his actions, including the staff who were ignored and unsupported. ERC and its entirely white leadership team made the decision to side with power and whiteness over safety and racial justice. To any person of color considering admitting to this facility — or someone looking to work here — I urge you to look elsewhere. This is not a trauma-informed environment. This is not a place that understands or responds appropriately to systemic racism or racial trauma. There is no real accountability. There is no safety for people of color. Only a system built to protect white comfort — even when it harms others. White corporate America won. So did the racist white man. And the people of color? We were retraumatized, silenced, and left with ZERO JUSTICE. ERC, this is what systemic racism looks like. And you are complicit. ***EDIT*** I want to thank select BHT floor staff, my personal treatment team, and all of nursing staff… Thank you for hearing us, listening to us, and allowing us to be angry and advocate for ourselves without trying to silence us. I appreciate you guys. WE appreciate the zero tolerance mentioned by select BHTs and nursing. Thank you guys for being here, and just doing what is right.

I spent around 3 months with ERC at various levels and overall had a very positive experience. If you come in with a high willingness to recover, the staff and other patients are more than willing to aid in your recovery. The groups and individual sessions were both very helpful. I’m thankful to ERC and all the staff and peers I interacted with.

Edit (9/4/2025): Today, I spoke candidly with my therapist about what's been going on in detail, and formally withdrew from the program. To any prospective patients: please stay away from this program, your recovery is not their treatment team's primary objective. -- Edit (9/3/2025): Today, I called the coordinators at 8:35 am to let them know that I couldn't sleep due to their abuse and no one answered. I left a message saying that I was going to bed and would contact them after I was able to get some sleep. In turn, they sent the police to my house to further intimidate me (again). -- EDIT (9/2/2025): Today, a woman that I have never met told me that we'd previously spoken face to face in order to sell a colleague's lies. -- Original Post (8/31/2025): I'm currently participating in this program and the program director has now actively sent me to two different ERs in the span of six days due to her intentional manipulation of the Chicago Police Department, Psychiarists, Physicians, Therapists, Mileu Coordinators, Support Staff and Patients. We deserve so much better.

They don't take my insurance and refuse to make an agreement with my insurance

0/10. This place set me back in my progress towards recovery and would not recommend this place. The team knew I had a problem regarding lax use but instead allowed me to administer my own laxatives. Therefore, myself, and other patients struggled with behaviors. They knew I was experiencing epigastric pain but the doctor refused to see me. This led me to go to an urgent care twice in one week. This same doctor accused me of misusing my prescription meds even though I was instructed to take them that way by my specialist. I witnessed therapist ignore a patient that spoke about suicidal ideation. That same therapist did not offer me any coping strategies or help even though she knew I had experienced something traumatic one day before treatment. The nature of this place is punitive. When I told my care team the issues I had, I was met with frowns and negative responses. For instance, I told them I had dietary concerns since I was lactose intolerant and I was forced to drink whole milk. I was told that I would just have to get through for the day. When I raised concerns again, my staff selected meal was two frozen chicken tenders and water even though I was required BY STAFF to have a fruit or vegetable. I noticed favoritism by the milieu coordinators and I did not feel medically safe or supported at this facility. I am very disappointed because I wanted to believe this place would give me the chance to make steps towards recovery. Instead, I left traumatized.

this is literally the worst thing i’ve ever experienced

I can safely say that you can ignore all the low star reviews. Not everyone is ready to recover and those who are not will resent this. Those who are ready to undertake that journey, I could not recommend this facility more. If not for the team here I would not be in the place I am now and I am eternally grateful to each and every staff member there(with one exception however this individual was fired after fellow patients and I talked to their patient advocate), without whom I do not know if I would still be here. The therapists and dietitians were incredibly supportive, kind, and patient with me. They allowed me to meet them where I was, not where they wanted me to be, while still pushing me forward towards where they knew I could be. The group sessions were also invaluable. During that time I learned so much from the group leaders and my peers. The support I received from my group was life altering and I am grateful to have met each and every one of them. Getting to share this awful, painful journey with them was a truly unique experience that I am so happy to have had. Do not take this to believe it is sunshine and rainbows here. It is brutal, recovery is brutal. It is some of if not the hardest work you will do in your life, but at the end of the day recovery is worth it. You are worth it.
