Deer Hollow Outpatient

Wonderful trauma processing. Very welcoming and meaningful approach.

This is a terrible program that will brainwash your partner, encourage them to abandon their values, and be completely self-centered. My husband went here for PTSD treatment and two weeks in decided he wanted to abandon his family out of nowhere. The therapists have no accountability and simply feed people what they want to hear. This man used to say “selfish is the worst thing I could ever be described as” but that’s exactly what this place has made him. All of the treatment focuses on self and not on healing within a family or community. Do not go here if you value your relationships.

Today I spoke with Mechelle in admissions. First, I explained I am not a first responder and asked if Deer Hollow was only for first responders. Mechelle said no, not at all. She answered some of my questions, and then asked me to describe my symptoms. She then asked what exactly I had experienced that I thought was traumatic. I said it was related to a relationship. She pushed for more information about what exactly happened. I explained it was related to SA. Mechelle then explained that their program is for people with actual, severe trauma like watching people die, and that it served people who had been through really intense and awful things, not people like me. She also said I probably couldn’t handle their program regardless because I was being cagey talking about what exactly happened to me with her. She said the program involves talking about triggering experiences frequently and at length, and it wouldn’t be a fit since I was having a hard time talking about the events with her. She also said in their program, I would need to listen to people in groups talk about horrible experiences, not like mine, which I probably wouldn’t be able to handle hearing. She then referred me to a women’s program that is not in my network. I was grateful to learn early in the process that the program is not helpful for or welcoming to people like me.

I began Deer Hollow’s outpatient program after completing residential treatment, and it became one of the most meaningful phases of my healing. Outpatient gave me the structure and support I still needed, while also allowing me to start rebuilding my life outside of treatment. The therapists at Deer Hollow are incredible. They understand trauma on a level I’ve never experienced before, and they know how to create a safe space where you can go deep without feeling overwhelmed or judged. The work we did — especially IFS and the group sessions — helped me continue unraveling the patterns and protective parts that had controlled so much of my life. What made outpatient so powerful for me was the combination of accountability, connection, and continued therapeutic intensity. I was able to practice real-world coping skills during the week and then bring what came up back into group and individual therapy. It felt like a bridge between treatment and everyday life, and it gave me confidence I didn’t have before. The community is also something special. Being surrounded by people who understand trauma, who get the ups and downs, and who are all working toward healing made me feel less alone. I built relationships there that still support me today. Deer Hollow’s outpatient program helped me solidify the progress I made in residential and gave me the tools to live with clarity, stability, and hope. I’m genuinely grateful for the care and compassion I received during this part of my journey.

You need to refine the IOP program the afternoon aspect of IOP in particular accountability for the afternoon.

I first attended Mountainside from April to May 2024 and was stabilized there before attending outpatient (I left a review for Mountainside well). To put it simply, Deer Hollow saved my life, without question. Alec was my therapist and he was incredible to work with. He introduced me to ART (Accelerated Resolution Therapy) and that was where I got the most relief from my PTSD symptoms. While the symptoms never completely went away and simply backed off a little bit, it was enough to where I could actually function without being overrun by them. I was challenged by Alec and other therapists when they'd be running group but I was never pushed beyond my boundaries. PHP/IOP is generally a 6 week program but I ended up staying in outpatient from May to September 2024 (with a three week break to go home in the summer) by my own choice as I knew by the six week mark that I wasn't ready to leave yet. I checked in with myself and my therapist regularly about this. I advocated for myself and stayed until I knew I was ready to graduate. I highly recommend doing this as some people think they can only stay for the 6 weeks and that's it. If you feel you need longer than that, speak up for yourself and speak to your therapist and Lisa about it (Lisa is amazing and fantastic, by the way). Long story short: This place is amazing and saved my life. I'm so glad that I gave them a chance and I'm so grateful for the help they gave me.
