Throughout my 58 years of life, I have endured a multitude of traumas —ranging from emotional, physical, and sexual abuse to navigating life as part of a marginalized community. This has led to battles with low self-esteem, shame, anxiety, depression, and even thoughts of suicide. Despite my ongoing attempts to identify the source of my perceived shortcomings, I have come to understand, thanks to The Bridge to Recovery, that it is not about what is inherently flawed within me, but rather about comprehending the profound impact of the experiences I have endured.
At The Bridge, I had the opportunity to dive deep into the wounds of trauma and shame alongside others who, while their experiences may have varied, shared the common thread of similar impacts. Supported by compassionate professionals within a safe and tranquil environment, we were treated with utmost dignity and respect as individuals seeking recovery. I share this testimonial to underscore my prior experiences at treatment centers that lacked the same level of care and understanding.
I was initially hesitant when I learned that there was no individual therapy available at The Bridge. However, I soon discovered the unique power of group therapy and the comfort of sharing experiences with others. Unlike traditional programs, at The Bridge, you start your journey with a phase mate group and progress through each phase together. Building trust with others has always been a challenge for me, which made the consistent group dynamic of The Bridge so crucial.
I felt incredibly fortunate to have participated in all three phases of the program. Each phase built upon the last, equipping me with essential tools for my recovery. By the time I reached the end of phase three, I felt truly prepared to move forward. Whether you choose to complete one phase or all three, The Bridge places a strong emphasis on aftercare planning. I was particularly impressed by the seamless communication between The Bridge team of professionals and my therapist and psychiatrist. As soon as I returned home, they were already informed of my progress, treatment, and aftercare plan, enabling them to offer immediate support in implementing recommendations.
Remaining connected with my fellow phase mates, both within my own phase and those from other phases, has been invaluable as we journey through life post-The Bridge. While I could go on and on about my experience, words alone cannot do justice to the transformative impact The Bridge has had on my life. I entered as a last resort, hoping to rediscover the light and hope I believed were gone. The Bridge not only led me back to them but also sparked a newfound sense of purpose within me, empowering me to look forward to the future with excitement rather than fear, and enabling me to find peace amidst life's challenges.
