Literally cannot think of one good thing about this place. Well, with the exception of a couple of staff members who were kind to us.
We were cash pay here and I know it's wrong to expect more in that scenario but I guess I kinda did. I especially expected professionalism and kindness and respect.
And warmth!!
No joke, the place is an ice box with no HVAC control whatsoever. Bring your own pillows and blankets since you're housed in a medical office building with thin thin blanket and plastic pillow.
From rude and abrupt staff, who were unprofessional and poor representatives of this facility, using inappropriate slang (booty juice!!!) while checking you in (gawd, I wish I would have followed my gut and walked right then) to the nurse on day one who literally was super huffy and going to hang up on me with my hearing aid questions. She later called to apologize which I appreciated. Good for her!
You'd hear others in visiting room complaining to their loved ones during each of my visits about clogged toilets and mean staff. This wasn't just an us thing.
I'd bring his belongings in and they end up in basement. When I asked why, Anna was rude and said they'll do it "today". This was 9am. Ok. Why didn't it get handled yesterday?!? Jeez. Frustrating to have to babysit every situation.
My loved one is almost completely deaf and wears hearing aids so the phones wouldn't work without his cell phone and earbuds and I was told they ask the Director for permission. That took 3 days. NOTE : No weekday visiting at all, so if you're profoundly deaf and need earbuds, forget about it. I was left being unable to communicate and he could not call me if he needed me. Which he did.
I kept asking for the director to call me back on difference issues, but that of course never happened. They take great pains to keep management hidden from you. I finally reached out to them on LinkedIn to get their attention. Ridiculous.
More upsetting to my family member was the way the staff let another patient mock and threaten my family member, shrugging when they asked for help. A psych hospital is very scary and there was no gentleness or compassion shown. He said that we got the dog and pony show in the lobby check in but as soon as they shut that door and he was in there alone with him, everything changed. Tone, attitude, etc., etc..Angry staff when he'd ask for clothing i'd brought In, described as a hussy fit. We're sorry. Isn't that part of your job? Blots of unhappy staff here, noticeable in their energy and lack of engagement.
My loved one left here in far worse shape than he went in. Each day he was "less than" and they were still not at therapeutic med levels after 6 days. They stretch out things for additional billing imo and this was truly a waste of 1000's of dollars. We left and have been told our poor experience will be used as a teaching opportunity.
When I explain to Dr Stepanoff that this was very cost prohibitive for us after six days and that I was looking at getting him onto a PPO plan as of February he even suggested that we could go ahead and make the medication adjustments at home and if needed, bring him back in February. Yet when we discharged, he didn't even come out to the lobby to say boo to me and didn't make any changes to the two other medications that he discussed changing.
We were left exactly the same as we came in with on those two. Why offer the solution if you're not gonna do it???
Think very hard about coming here...feel free to message me if you'd like to know more about our stay.
Best of luck..truly. Needing impatient mental health care is very daunting and scary.
It's our patient and family member opinion that Ocean View needs a complete retraining on patient care and they definitely need to fix the icy conditions.
